Every website has its own individual space on the World Wide Web, which is nothing but a virtual directory. These directories have a particular address known as the IP address. A sequence of 12 digits forms an IP address. Since it would be difficult to remember the IP address of every site, Domain Name System was introduced. A series of alphabets allocated to each IP address which is further assigned to a web server forms the domain name, also known as the URL.
Domain name consists of two parts called the name and the extension. The name usually describes the website and its purpose, where as extensions are .com, .org or .gov. Most commonly used extension is .com and next comes .net. Extensions like .edu, .gov or .org are for specific organizations only, For example, educational institutions use .edu, government institutions use .gov and .org is used by registered organizations.
